Certain injectable treatments have been developed specifically to reduce submental fat, commonly referred to as a double chin. For appropriate candidates, injectable treatment can gradually reduce fat beneath the chin and improve the appearance of the jawline and profile. However, fullness beneath the chin is not always caused solely by fat. Skin laxity, facial anatomy, muscle structure, and other factors can influence the appearance of this area, so an assessment is important before treatment.

Fat cells destroyed by an effective fat-reduction treatment do not regenerate in the same manner as untreated fat cells. However, treatment does not prevent future weight gain or changes in the surrounding untreated fat cells. Fat-dissolving injections should be viewed as a contouring treatment.

The number of treatments varies according to the product used, treatment area, amount of localized fat, desired correction, and individual response. Some patients may benefit from multiple treatment sessions spaced apart to allow the area to recover and results to develop.

Results from injectable fat reduction are gradual rather than immediate. The body needs time to respond to treatment and clear disrupted fat cells. Changes may become increasingly noticeable over the weeks following treatment, and additional improvement may occur after subsequent sessions when multiple treatments are recommended.

Swelling is common following certain fat-dissolving injections and can sometimes be significant, particularly when treating the area beneath the chin. Temporary bruising, redness, tenderness, firmness, numbness, or discomfort may also occur. Your provider will discuss expected recovery and aftercare before treatment so you can plan accordingly.
