A chemical peel is a professional skin-resurfacing treatment that uses a carefully selected chemical solution to exfoliate layers of the skin and promote cellular renewal.

Chemical peels may be used to address several skin concerns, including hyperpigmentation, dark spots, uneven skin tone, acne, post-acne discoloration, rough texture, dullness, and certain fine lines. The appropriate peel depends on what is causing the concern. For example, treatment for acne-related discoloration may differ from treatment for melasma or signs of sun damage.

Yes. Chemical peels can be performed on melanin-rich skin tones, but appropriate patient selection, peel formulation, treatment depth, and aftercare are especially important.

Melanin-rich skin tones can be more susceptible to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

The amount of visible peeling varies according to the type and depth of the peel, the formulation used, and your individual skin response. Some superficial peels may produce minimal visible flaking, while other treatments can cause more noticeable peeling over several days. Some patients may benefit from incorporating both treatments into a comprehensive skin plan at different times.

Before your appointment, your provider may recommend temporarily discontinuing certain retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, or other potentially irritating skincare products. Avoiding unnecessary sun exposure before treatment may also be important.

After a chemical peel, the skin should be treated gently while it heals. Your provider may recommend a simplified skincare routine involving gentle cleansing, appropriate moisturization, and diligent sun protection. Avoid picking, peeling, scrubbing, or intentionally removing flaking skin. Certain active skincare ingredients may also need to be temporarily discontinued.

Because newly treated skin can be particularly sensitive to ultraviolet exposure, following your provider's sunscreen and sun-avoidance recommendations is especially important.
